Spewer is a collection of unix utilities to simplify the building and
modification of gallery sites. While there are many other programs to do
this, most dynamically generate the HTML for each visitor. This makes
the sites less responsive to the users, and is prone to breakage - if an
update to the server's software changes something that the gallery generator
relies on, the entire site can become unviewable. With spewer, you only
run the generator for new updates, so anything that breaks it will only affect
new content.
Spewer uses a template language similar to that in Addendát to control webpage generation.
Templates are checked hierarchically, and can be partially or completely
overridden where desired.
To use Spewer, you will need shell access to a unixlike server on which your
website resides, and you will need experience operating in a unix shell.
There is something of a learning curve involved; I wouldn't advise using
spewer for small websites.
If you don't have access to a unix shell on your webserver, you can keep
a copy of your website on a local unix machine, maintain it using spewer,
and then upload the changed portions; the advantage of this approach is that
it ensures you always have two copies of your work; the disadvantage is that
it increases the work to update your site.
If you want to use Spewer, you have two options:
Buy a license to use it on one of your sites. This will cost you $300 and a
year's membership to the site you will be using it on, $100+membership for
each additional site. You will be entitled to free upgrades for a year and
six months of support.
If you buy a Spewer license and find it unsatisfactory, you can get a
refund of everything except the year's membership if you destroy all copies
of Spewer and don't use the HTML generated by it.
Alternatively, you can hire me to administer your site using Spewer. My
rates will depend on the contract terms and the amount of work required.
